Jerry Ray Jarrell

Jerry Ray Jarrell, 63 passed away at his home in Whitesville, WV surrounded by his family and friends on Sunday, January 7, 2018. He was born January 15, 1954 to Hershel and Mary Ann Jarrell. He was a retired coal miner and a deacon at Pettus Baptist Church. Jerry was a man of God loved hunting and fishing and church and he loved his family unconditionally. He is survived by his loving wife, of 40 years, Goldie Jarrell of Whiteville, son, Mark Jarrell “Vanessa” of Madison, daughter, Christina Lafferty “Travis” of Peytona, grandchildren, Bailey and Trenton Lafferty of Peytona, sisters, Phyllis Bell “Charles” and Elizabeth Bell “Carl” brothers, Pearl Jarrell “June” all of Whitesville, and several nieces and nephews, He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Lacy Jarrell. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 3:00pm at Pettus Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pettus Baptist Church at PO Box 86 Whitesville, WV 25209. Armstrong Funeral Home is serving the family

Kenneth “Butch” Cottrell

Kenneth “Butch” Cottrell of Naoma, WV went to be with his savior Jesus on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at his home. He loved fishing, hunting, and working in the coal mines. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Ina Cottrell, a sister, Peggy, two brothers, Bob and Jimmy Cottrell. He is survived by his wife, Linda of 53 years of marriage, his only surviving brother, Ray Cottrell and his wife, Lottie; He has eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, whom he loves very much. He had many friends, cousins and nephews whom he loved. Mr. Cottrell’s request was for cremation only, there will be no service. Armstrong Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mark Anthony Scarbro, 56, of Mount Hope, WV passed away, Thursday December 28, 2017 while out cutting wood.

He was born June 7, 1961 at Beckley, WV a son of the late Lester Edwin and Guy Eula O’Neal Scarbro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Teresa Scarbro, a sister, Elizabeth Jarrell, and brother, Arthur “Pee Wee” Scarbro.

He is survived by his loving fiance and family, Annette Pettry Workman; a son, Anthony Jenkins; three sisters, Priscilla Acord and husband, Dean of Beckley, WV, Susan Cortis of PA and Rena Scarbro of Beckley, WV; brothers, Joe Scarbro of Roanoke, VA, Robert Scarbro and wife, Teresa of Arnett, WV, Greg Scarbro and wife, Kim of Clearfork, WV, David Scarbro and wife, Tina of Raonoke, VA, and John Scarbro and companion, Christina of Roanoke, VA.

Timothy Paul "Big Tim" Dillon

Timothy Paul "Big Tim" Dillon, 57 years old of Whitesville, WV passes away Friday, December 29, 2017 after a long illness.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert "Cotton" Dillon and Clara Barker Dillon.

He is survived by the love of his life for the last 32 years Cindy Howell. Also, Allen Howell (Nichole) of Whitesville, WV and Shelli (Mark) Rinchich of Comfort, WV., who he raised as his own. He is also survived by his grandkids, Seth and Kenzi Rinchich and Braden and Maddie Howell. They were the light of his life. Also surviving sister Debbie (Jimmy) Kinder of Orgas,WV, Charles (Barb) Dickens of Whitesville and Robert (Dorothy) Dillon of Seth, WV. Also, survived by several nieces and nephews.

Timmy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitesville. He was a member of the Whitesville Fire Department. He was formerly employed at CSX Railroad and Massey Energy Company.

Timmy enjoyed going to his camps, riding his Harley and being with his family. His happiest times were at his camp and with the grandkids.

At his request there will be no service. His wish was to be cremated. Armstrong Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Lawrence Grey Grubbs

Lawrence Grey Grubbs, 86, of Whitesville passed away 12/30/17, after a short illness.

He was born October 19, 1931 in Pettus WV. Graduated from Sherman High School, and served in the US Army after graduation. Owner of Grubbs Construction Company.

Surviving are his wife Elizabeth Ann Grubbs. Sons, James Michael and Becky of Charleston, David Patrick of Point Pleasant. Daughter, Susan Louise of Whitesville and companion John Nikbeen. Grandchildren, Steven and fiancÚ, Julia, Philip, Sydney and Daniel Grubbs. Great Grandchildren, Asa and Tripp Grubbs.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Whitesville at Noon. With Father Dass officiating. Family visitation will be at 10:00am. Friends may call from 11am to Noon. Interment will follow in the Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV

Serreda Mae Banks


Serreda Mae Banks, 89, of Seth, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on December 26, 2017, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Serreda was born in High Coal, West Virginia to the late Oliver Hudson and Lucy Grover Hudson on June 14, 1928. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Calvin Coolidge Banks, her daughter who was truly the "apple of her eye," Joan Cooleen Banks-Miller, her brothers Clifford, Earl, and Charles Hudson, her sisters Myrtle and Dovie Hudson, and Oliver and Wilma Hudson. Serreda graduated from Sherman High School in 1946. Serreda then devoted more than thirty years to the United States Postal Service, where she served as the Postmaster in Seth, WV. Serreda was a member of Healing Stream Baptist Church in Seth, and an affiliate member of the First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Serreda enjoyed reading the Bible, being with her family, the beach, riding the golf cart, singing, dancing, and cheering on the Sherman Tide, as well as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. A loving wife, a dedicated mother, a wonderful and devoted nana, and a faithful friend and neighbor, Serreda will be missed by all. She had a passionate love and caring for all; her life was dedicated to caregiving and service to her family and friends. Serreda is survived by twin granddaughters whom she loved very much, Nadia and Nevada Miller, her loving son-in-law, Bill Miller, as well as many nieces and nephews, and her loving companion Miss Daisy. Visitation will be held at the Healing Stream Baptist Church in Seth, WV on Monday, January 1st from 6pm to 8pm. The funeral will also be held at the Healing Stream Baptist Church in Seth, WV on Tuesday, January 2nd at 1pm with Reverend Keith George officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Armstrong Funeral Home are handling the funeral arrangements.

Keith Wayne Hensley

Seth, WV - Keith Wayne Hensley, age 83, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2017. Born in Seth, WV on May 19, 1934, he was the son of the late Charles W and Wilma (Miller) Hensley. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabell "Lee" Hensley. Also preceding him in death, his step-mother, Donna (Sims) Hensley, a brother, James Miller and a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Abner.

After two tours in the Army, the family finally settled in Boone County, where he and Lee both worked for the Boone County Board of Education until retirement. After serving 26 years as a school bus driver, most Friday nights you would find Keith on the sidelines of the Sherman High School football games where he either ran the chains or kept the footballs clean. He was a Tidester through and through, having graduated in 1953 as part of the 25th graduating class.

Keith was a Lifetime Member of the Racine Fire Department, which he helped to found.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughter Katherine "Kathy" Akers and husband Thomas of Rocky Mount, NC; sons, Charles "Chuckie" Hensley and wife Mellisa of Lester, WV, and Stephen Hensley and wife Angelique of Peytona, WV; five grandchildren, Nathaniel Akers of Wilmington, NC; Christopher Hensley and wife Heather of Whitesville, WV; Kristen Akers of Rocky Mount, NC; David Hensley and wife Jessica of Beckley, WV; Lana Jo Redden of Lester, WV; and one great grandchild.

Keith also leaves behind two life long best friends and cousins, Jerry S Hensley, Sr and Willis "Budgie" Hensley, who in their earlier years could be found on fishing trips together and later in life at football games. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 6 PM to 9 PM at the Racine Fire Department. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 11 am at the Racine Fire Department with the Rev. Ricky Peters officiating. A burial will follow at Coon Cemetery in Seth, WV. Armstrong Funeral Home Whitesville is serving the family.

Linda L. Thomas,62, of Comfort, WV went home to be with her God with her family by her side on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. She was born Nov. 10, 1955 in Seth, WV to the late Woodrow and Mary Watkins Dotson. She was a housewife, a loving mother, wife and she took care of many children thru her life. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Dannie Dotson. Those left to cherish her are her husband, Raymond Thomas; her children: Mary Thomas, Marty Thomas, Jamie Thomas, Terry Thomas and Tonya Thomas all of Comfort, WV; a son-in-law, Jimmy Wilbanks of Comfort, WV; three grandchildren: Sarah Cox and Brysen Thomas of Comfort, WV and Brandon Thomas of Buffalo, WV; two sisters, Annalee Halstead of Parkersburg, WV and Sylvia Adkins of Comfort, WV; a brother, Ray Dotson of Leon, WV; other survivers include: Angie Bishop, Crystal Bishop, Jessie Bishop, Woodrow Bishop and Samantha Bishop all of Ashford, WV; she was blessed with many neices, nephews, cousins and friends and her beloved dog, Paco. Funeral services will be held on Saturday Dec. 16, 2017 in the Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville, WV at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Roger Halstead officiating. Interment will follow in the Pineview Cemetery Orgas, WV. The visitation will be one hour before the service.

Robert Eugene Shaffer, 78, of Dorothy, WV passed away, Monday, December 11, 2017 at his home after a long illness. He was born April 26, 1939 at Shallmar, MD a son of the late Ward and Daisey Nelson Shaffer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, David Zornes. Robert loved out-doors, hunting, gensenging, and fishing. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Bonnie Zornes Shaffer; a daughter, Amy Burgess and husband, Jeremy of Clear Creek and his pride and joys his grandchildren Zach, T.J. and Kaitlyn and a dear friend, Basil Green.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon December 14, 2017 at two o’clock in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, WV

Nancy was born April 5, 1943 at Naoma, WV. She was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtle Holstein and a brother, Dean Clay.

She was a Caregiver by trade and helped a lot of people with over 25 years of service.

She is survived by a son, Kevin Dickens of Rock Creek, WV; a daughter, Tina (David) Scarbro of Roanoke, VA; a sister, Gloria Sue Lengyel of Kanawha City, WV.

Pebble Ailene Murray, 71, of Seng Creek, WV passed away, November 22, 2017 at the Hubbard House, Charleston, WV after a long illness.

She was born February 5, 1947 in Eunice, WV a daughter of the late Don Beecher and Katherine Mcknight Perry.

Pebble was a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Scottie Joe Murray Sr. and a sister, Shirley Ferrell.

She is survived by two sons, Scottie Murray Jr. of Hillsborough, NC and Don Franklin Murray of New Bern, NC; a sister, Carol Massey of Seng Creek, WV; two grandsons.

Danny Lee Cantley II

Danny Lee Cantley II, age 40 passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at CAMC after a courageous battle with cancer. This was Danny’s second time with this chronic illness. Danny leaves behind his beloved wife, Dece Joy Cantley of 12 years and his twin daughters, Daniella and Christina age 4. Danny was born in Charleston, WV on September 7, 1977 and grew up in Racine, WV. He was preceded in death by: grandparents, Chalmer and Christine Cantley, John and Doris Protan, Uncle Mickey Protan, Aunts: Karen Cantley and Doris Williams. He was the son of Danny Lee Cantley and Connie Protan Cantley. Danny leaves his sister, Natalie Cantley of Texas and Nonoy and Linda Tumilap of the Philippines behind as well. Danny worked for WV State Highways Department and WV State Treasurers office a total of 22 years. He retired from the State Treasurers office on June 30, 2017 due to his illness, holding the position as supervisor/manager of the warehouse. Danny had countless friends at work which he truly enjoyed spending time with. Danny was an incredible person that loved travelling with his family, especially his twin daughters. He enjoyed NASCAR (Matt Kenseth 20), football (Carolina Panthers), baseball (Cleveland Indians) and video games. His music favorites included the classics: Pink Floyd, Led Zeplin and Tom Petty. Danny enjoyed exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. Danny Lee was a Christian and a member of Sylvester Baptist Church and after moving to Cross Lanes, he attended the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church.
